'Break down those barriers': Sharks celebrate International Women's Day

The Sharks proudly celebrate International Women's Day (IWD) today, recognising the invaluable female players, staff members, volunteers and fans who shape the club and our game.

This year's IWD theme is 'accelerate action', emphasising the importance of taking swift and decisive steps to achieve gender equality.

With the support of major NRLW partner Quest Apartment Hotels – who hosted winger Cassie Staples at their empowering IWD Luncheon in Melbourne earlier this week – the Sharks are driving meaningful progress towards this goal through investment in female pathways, leadership roles and community initiatives.

Having been trailblazers in the female rugby league space as the first club to offer a professional contract before the NRLW's inception, the Sharks remain committed to providing opportunities and platforms for women on and off the park.

The club fields teams in the Lisa Fiaola, Tarsha Gale and Harvey Norman NSW Women's Premiership competitions, creating a clear pathway to the top level. Reaching the grand final in the club's second NRLW season last year highlighted the continued success and growth of the Sharks women's program.

Across both the Football and Leagues Clubs, the Sharks are fortunate to have an array of accomplished, talented women working tirelessly in the office, boardroom and hospitality industry.

"International Women's Day means taking a moment to celebrate all the beautiful women out there – the young girls, the mothers, the sisters – celebrating how far we've come, what it feels like to be a woman and how great we are in society," Sharks NRLW star and Equal Access Program Lead Emma Verran said.

"My message to girls on International Women's Day is to just keep fighting, keep pushing, break down those barriers. You deserve it."

Fellow NRLW player Caitlan Johnston-Green added: "My message to girls on International Women's Day is keep doing what you're doing. We are strong, powerful women, so never doubt what you do and take it on with two hands.

"We play in such a male-dominant sport, so I think it's important to celebrate and acknowledge the people that put a lot of work and effort into what we do and helped bring us into this world."

Vinh Tran, the club's Head of Community and Government Relations, said: "On International Women's Day – and every day – the Sharks recognise the incredible women who contribute across all facets of our club as well as the amazing work in our community and grassroots junior clubs.

"From the field to the office and beyond, we wouldn't be where we are without their efforts.

"We also acknowledge the vital support of all the women in our lives – mothers, siblings, partners and friends – who are an extension of the black, white and blue family.

"A special thanks goes to our major NRLW and community partner Quest Apartment Hotels, who share our passion and always use their voice to uplift and advocate for women. We are proud to be aligned with such a value-driven organisation."
