The team from the Aquinas College at Menai has emerged the winners of the Sharks All Schools and GIO Cup knockout competitions with a hard fought victory over St Patrick’s Sutherland in the final.

In a close tussle, Aquinas gave up the first try but bounced back from that early setback, with two tries, one in each half, enough to give them a 10-4 victory.

Both teams had finished on top of their pools after the round robin section of the event to qualify for the final, with St Patrick’s forced to battle hard to beat De La Salle Cronulla in their last game and move on to the competition decider.

Aquinas was impressive in cruising through the group stage undefeated, before proving just a little bit too good for their opponents in the final, the final try coming in the last minutes of the match.

In all 10 local area high schools participated in the event, which was contested on the back fields at Remondis Stadium.

As the winner of the local area knockout, Aquinas will now move on to play the winner of the St George district GIO competition, while also having the opportunity to compete in the state All Schools Knockout at a later date.
