Flegg Sharks bow out despite last round win

The Jersey Flegg Sharks showed plenty of character to fight back and score a 35-22 win over the Bulldogs in their last round match, however in wasn't enough for them to sneak into the competition finals.

The Sharks needed a win over the Bulldogs, coupled with a Tigers victory over the Dragons were they to qualify for the five-team Finals series, and while the young Cronulla side managed a victory in their game at PointsBet Stadium, across town the result didn't fall in their favour as they finished one point outside the top five.

In speaking immediately after the game, coach George Ndaira was hopeful, but unfortunately the cards didn't fall his way, the Dragons scoring a 32-12 victory.

"We'll be up checking the scores on our phones, hoping the result goes our way. The boys deserve it," he said shortly after full time.

Unfortunately the young Sharks didn't quite get what they may have felt they deserved, despite 12 wins and a draw from their 22 games played, their 29 competition points was one shy of three teams level in third, leaving them in sixth position and ruing a disappointing loss to the 10th-placed Manly last weekend.

The Sharks went to half time up 14-10, surrendered the lead to the Bulldogs early in the second period, before coming home over the top of their rivals late in the contest.

A Tom Rodwell try and Ryan Rivett conversion levelled the scores with just over 15 minutes remaining, before two more four-pointers to half back Rivett, then forward Josh Finau, sealed the result.

The five-team Jersey Flegg Finals series will feature the Roosters, Knights, Dragons, Tigers and Panthers.
