Flegg Sharks slump to Sea Eagles loss

The Jersey Flegg Sharks have suffered a heavy loss at the hands of the Manly Sea Eagles in putting a serious dent in their premiership aspirations.

The Sharks were unable to find any sort of rhythm in a match where Manly were dominant throughout, the home team winning 50-22, leaving the Finals hopes of the Cronulla side now dependent on a victory in their last game with other results also falling in their favour.

It took Manly 11 minutes to post first points and when the Sharks responded shortly after courtesy of a Sam Stonestreet try, at 4-all, nobody at 4Pines Park could have predicted what was to follow.

Despite being well and truly out of the running for a Finals berth it seemed like the Sea Eagles had more to play for, with the home side playing with more energy in managing two converted tries before the break to take a 16-4 advantage to half time.

At 12-points down a second half comeback wasn't out of the question for the young Cronulla side, however five tries in 15 minutes by the Sea Eagles, coming from a combination of expansive play and some Sharks errors and at 38 to 4 the result was confirmed.

The Sharks did show some character to score three quick tries of their own, the first to stand in half back Tully Wilton, the second by strong running winger Tom Rodwell and the third to hooker Sam Healey, put some respectability in the scoreline at 38-22, before Manly closed out the match with two more converted tries to complete the scoring.

The Sharks will now need to regroup ahead of their last round game against the Bulldogs, and hope either the Wests Tigers, Dragons or Panthers stumble next weekend if they are to qualify for the five-teams Jersey Flegg Finals series.
