The scene of many memorable moments throughout the Sharks’ run to Premiership glory last season, Southern Cross Group Stadium last week proved the ‘premier’ location for filming of the National Rugby League’s 2017 television commercial.
The Stadium and Leagues Club both showcased their versatility, hosting a production crew of 48 over a two-day period. Scenes were shot in the Shark Bar, various locations within the stadium including the field, change rooms, tunnel and stands, and the car park.
Nine players from six NRL clubs, including Round 1 opponents the Brisbane Broncos, were on hand to film the exciting campaign.
Cast members included the Sharks’ Premiership-winning trio, Chad Townsend, Valentine Holmes and Paul Gallen. The NRL TVC will also feature Cronulla’s James Tuitahi, Kyle Flanagan, Blayke Brailey, Jesse Savage, Jaemon Salmon, Semisi Kioa and Amo Lualua.
Kirin Lindop, Head of Stadium and High Performance Facilities at Southern Cross Group Stadium, was impressed with the production over the two-day period.
“The NRL engaged some of the best creative and commercial film directors in the country. It was exciting to be a part of the complex and very professional operation.” Lindop said.
Southern Cross Group Stadium is quickly establishing itself as a stellar filming location, and not just in a Rugby League capacity.
In November of 2016, the Stadium was the scene for an X-Factor segment featuring the Sharks’ Chris Heighington and X-Factor judge, Mel B, and the location of the Powerade commercial featuring Billy Slater.
“The NRL TVC will portray the many facets of not only the Stadium, but also the Leagues Club and its surroundings. The crew shot so many different scenes using rain and smoke machines and fireworks.” Lindop said.
According to Lindop, Southern Cross Group Stadium has a certain character that makes for a unique filming location.
“The Stadium has much down time and is an empty shell, waiting for great content. Filming in the venue is certainly something we would like to grow in the future.” Lindop said.
The NRL will launch the 2017 Telstra Premiership TV campaign next week.
