Sharks secure former sevens star Hannaway

The Sharks have snared the signature of former Australian rugby sevens prodigy Georgia Hannaway on a three-year NRLW deal.

Hannaway, who represented her country at the 2019-20 Sevens World Series as an 18-year-old, is currently playing for the Norths Devils in the QRL's BMD Premiership.

She is contracted to the Cronulla club until the end of 2026.

The highly rated playmaker, 23, scored a whopping four tries in a recent game against the Western Clydesdales and has been integral to her team's success.

The talented five-eighth will hit the ground running when she arrives for pre-season training at Cronulla after playing in the finals with the Devils.

"Georgia has great footballing instincts, as she's shown in the BMD Premiership, and will be a valuable addition to our squad," Sharks coach Tony Herman said.

"She's a strong ball runner, extremely quick and will be primed to succeed in the NRLW given her experience in the international arena at a young age."

Hannaway will have some familiar faces to help her adjust to life in the Sutherland Shire having played sevens for Australia with Emma Tonegato and Rhiannon Byers.

After undergoing a shoulder reconstruction last year, she has recorded nine tries in as many games for Norths this season upon returning to rugby league. Hannaway played the 13-a-side code as a teenager before switching to sevens.

"It means everything to me that the Sharks have given me the chance to show them what I can do. I really appreciate it," Hannaway said.

"I didn't expect anything this year because I had a really bad year with ups and downs with injuries last year. I was cruising back into league and didn't think anything of it. But the coaches have made me feel so welcomed, so I couldn't turn it down.

"I'm hoping I can bring a little bit of my flair to the Sharks and join up with girls like Emma Tonegato and Jada Taylor to show everyone what we can do."

Hannaway's Norths team face the Burleigh Bears in a semi-final on Saturday.
