Sharks skipper Paul Gallen will return to where his representative career began after it was announced he will captain City Origin in the annual City v Country clash in Mudgee on May 7.

Gallen, who played his one and only game for City back in 2006 in his first senior representative match, would go on to play 32 Tests for Australia and 24 Origin games for NSW.

“I was picked on the bench in 2006 and haven’t really had the opportunity to play for City since,” Galen said.

“I remember the game, we we’re beaten on the bell but I had a reasonable game myself, it was the game that spring-boarded my rep career and I was fortunate enough to play for NSW and Australia after that.

“It was an honour to play in that arena back then and it will be an honour to play again this year and to captain the City side.”

The 2017 City v Country match will be the last in the current format, with the game to be dropped from the schedule from next year, making Gallen’s inclusion even more significant under those circumstances.

At the announcement of Gallen as City captain the NSWRL also announced a jersey naming sponsor.
