Young Cronulla district baseballer Ben Tsui was presented with The Steve Rogers Memorial Junior Sports Person of the Year Award at the annual Sharks Sports Council Presentation Evening held at Sharkies Leagues Club last Friday.
On a night which celebrated the 14 intra clubs in the Sharks Sports Council, the high achievers were recognised and the accomplishments of all those involved were celebrated, with Tsui a 16-year-old Kirrawee High student, a worthy winner of night’s major award.
Darren McConnell from the Sharks Board of Directors, after earlier giving a presentation on the current state of the club, the Woolooware Bay development and the exciting times ahead for the Sharks both on and off the playing field, was on hand to present Tsui with his Rogers Memorial award.
“We told Ben he was nominated for the award but we didn’t say anything to him about winning before the night,” mum Kerry Tsui said. “But when he did win he was chuffed and very appreciative. It was nice to see him so pleased to have been chosen for the award.”
Considering his achievements in the sport of baseball it should have come as no surprise that Tsui was singled out for the prestigious accolade.
A member of NSW age group teams for the past four years, in recognition of his talents and obvious potential, Tsui was this year selected from players of a similar age from around the country for the Major League Baseball Academy Camp, held on the Gold Coast last July.
Despite being just 16, Tsui is currently training with the NSW Under-18’s team which will contest the National Championships in Sydney in the New Year.
Also in showcasing his sporting ability, Tsui was a member of Sharks rugby league academy squads in the under 13’s and 14’s age groups while playing for the Gymea club before concentrating his energies on the sport of baseball.
On the night other various interclub awards were presented in the 14 different pursuits included in the Sports Council, with baseball, billiards and snooker, hockey, indoor bowls and lawn bowls, men’s and ladies golf, little athletics, netball, swimming, water polo, rugby league, photography and toastmasters all recognised on the night.
