Sharks’ women at the World Cup: Round 2

Tiana Penitani Gray and Quincy Dodd both scored in the Jillaroos' 78-0 win over England, and Chantay Kiria-Ratu posted 22 points on her Kiwi Ferns debut as the Sharks' women starred in Round 2 of the Women's Rugby League World Cup.

Eight Sharks took the field for Australia, New Zealand and Fiji, and every one of them finished on the winning side.

Here's how every Shark fared in week two.

Tiana Penitani Gray (Australia)
Result: Australia 78 def. England 0, HBF Park, Saturday 24 October

  • Started in the second row, then shifted to centre
  • scored a try and set another three up; as well as topping Australia's tackle count

The Cronulla captain drew two defenders to put Chapman over inside the first few minutes. When Julia Robinson broke her wrist, Penitani Gray moved into the centres and scored a late try of her own. The Jillaroos are the first team into the semi-finals.

  • Kiwi Ferns debut at five-eighth
  • 1 try, 9 goals, 22 points, to go with 1 try assist and 3 line break assists

Annessa Biddle (New Zealand)
Result: New Zealand 92 def. France 0

  • Started in the second row
  • Most post-contact metres with 78m

Staples was a regular carrier out of Fiji's own end in Port Moresby. The win is the biggest in Bulikula history and leaves them one win from the semi-finals in their first World Cup. She said afterwards the scoreline didn't show how tough the game was.

Talei Holmes (Fiji)

  • Most tackles with 29

Holmes took plenty of the hard carries through the middle as Fiji's defence kept the Orchids scoreless in the second half.

  • Started at prop

Ahsam added punch to a Fijian forward pack that laid the platform for the Bulikula's first World Cup win.

  • Started in the second row

Vakacavu came into the starting side in place of the injured Tamika Jones to round off a Fiji forward pack featuring three Sharks.
