'I’m really happy': Gabrael extends until 2029

A centre with an innate try-scoring ability, Michael Gabrael has signed a contract extension that will see him remain at the Sharks for a further two years.

Already contracted for 2027, the new deal will see Gabrael continue his rugby league journey with Cronulla until at least the end of the 2029 season.

An Eels junior who arrived at the Sharks ahead of the 2024 season via the Bulldogs, Gabrael earnt an NRL debut in 2026 as a result of his performances for the Jets, with Sharks General Manager Football Darren Mooney confident his best is yet to come.

“Michael is still only 21, but he has now spent three years in our full-time program. During that time, he has worked hard, continued to develop his game, and thoroughly earned his opportunity to make his NRL debut late this season,” Mooney said.

“That opportunity may have come even earlier if not for a few injury setbacks during the year. He has genuine pace and power, and we believe he is well placed to challenge for a regular spot in our NRL side next season.

“We’re pleased Michael has committed his future to the Sharks, and we believe he has all the attributes to develop into a quality NRL player.”

The 21-year-old Gabrael boasts an impressive strike rate with 27 tries and 10 assists from just 33 appearances over the last two years while playing in the Knock-On NSW Cup for the Newtown Jets.

Prior to that, his talent was recognised at a representative level, with Gabrael selected to play for the NSW Under 19s in 2024 after playing for NSW City Under 18s the year prior.

In an impressive first-up performance in the top grade when the Sharks played the Storm in round 27, Gabrael ran for 125 metres from just 13 carries, with 40 post-contact metres, while also making 10 tackles with no misses, in 70 minutes on the field.

While the Sharks were pleased to have secured Gabrael's services long-term, the player himself was equally excited to be continuing his rugby league career at the Cronulla club.

“I’m really happy to be re-signing. It’s a club I’m really grateful to be a part of, and I’m loving my time here,” Gabrael said.

“It means a lot for my family. They’ve always supported me and been there for me, so I’m really grateful to have them by my side. Being able to play for the Sharks, chase my dream and re-sign with the club is something I’m really thankful for.

“I’m excited for what’s to come next season. I’m looking forward to getting back out there with the boys,” Gabrael added.
