“Fifita... AW FIFITA! I can’t believe it,” Michael Ennis exclaimed in his famous interview after the 2016 grand final, which summed up the emotions of just about every Sharks fan perfectly.
Of course, he was referring to Andrew Fifita’s herculean match-winning try, when the prop-star barged through Melbourne’s defence and helped break a 49-year wait for Cronulla’s faithful.
That moment is now painted onto a wall at Ocean Protect Stadium and was unveiled to Fifita today.
“It’s just good to see something up here from that year, and they had to choose the best-looking person to put up here,” he laughed in classic Andrew Fifita fashion.
“I brought my son down here just to have a look, and I actually recorded his reaction, and he was stoked.”
Special murals have been unveiled at every club, all commissioned by Telstra to celebrate Telstra Together Round and the company’s 25 years as the NRL’s major sponsor.
They asked each club to identify their favourite moment from the last two decades and a half, and the Sharks went with Fifita’s grand final try.
“Yeah, quite privileged to have the mural, and that especially celebrating 25 years of Telstra in the game within the game,” the Cronulla legend shared.
“To be selected for the most memorable moment for the Sharks is quite an honour, and I can put that down to my team, the Cronulla Sharks, and I have to give praise to Mick Ennis because he gave me the nod and I got that moment.”
Their 10-year-reunion is on in two weeks’ time when the 2026 Sharks take on the Storm in round 27 at Ocean Protect Stadium.
