Despite a somewhat injury interrupted junior representative season, young Sharks front rower Jamie Curren has earned selection in the City Under-18’s team to play Country at Four Pines Park, Manly, tomorrow.
Curren, an imposing figure for the Sharks SG Ball side this year, was the only Cronulla representative chosen across the City 16’s and 18’s squads.
The match serves as a selection trial for the under 19’s NSW Origin team.
“Jamie has been a standout through the age groups while progressing through the Sharks pathways system, has a big future ahead and although his season was more quality than quantity as he battled a few injuries this year, he deserves his chance in the City team,” Sharks Development and Pathways Manager Glenn Brailey said.
“On behalf of the Sharks, we wish him well in this City-Country match on Saturday.”
Country v City matches started in 1911 with the best players from Country Rugby League taking on the best players from the NSWRL Premiership. The concept became a regular fixture on the calendar in 1928, and from 1987-2017 was played under Origin selection rules. The representative fixture returned to the NSWRL calendar in 2021 after a brief hiatus.
This weekend’s game will include a GIO Under 16s NSW Country v NSW City game at 11, the GIO Under 18s NSW Country v NSW City game at 12.35pm and the senior open-age GIO Men’s NSW Country v NSW City match at 2.20pm.
All games will be televised on NSWRL TV on BarTV, which now has a dedicated app available on the Apple App and Google Play stores.
Tickets are available at the gate at 4 Pines Park on Saturday 16 May, and through Ticketmaster, with prices only $10 for adults and $5 for children aged 3-15 years.
