Polata commits to Sharks on two-year deal

The Sharks are pleased to announce the signing of Tonga and Queensland representative China Polata on a two-year deal from 2026.

Polata, who has played 18 NRLW games since making her debut for the Broncos in 2022, has spent the past three seasons with the Cowboys.

After starting her career as a winger, the 23-year-old has transitioned into a damaging second-rower with the capability of lining up at prop.

Having fought back from an ACL injury to feature in North Queensland's last three games this year – including an elimination-final loss to her future Cronulla teammates – Polata is eager to embrace a fresh challenge in the Sutherland Shire.

"I'm super excited to be part of Cronulla's club and culture," Polata said

"When speaking to Tony (Herman, NRLW head coach) and Casey (Bromilow, NRLW & Female Pathway Manager), I found that a lot of what they're about as a club aligns with my values and morals, not just as a player but a person.

"I'm super excited for this new experience as I've never lived in Sydney before. I can't wait to play alongside the girls and learn heaps while doing so."

Herman welcomed Polata to the Sharks, highlighting her talent and versatility.

"China is a terrific addition to our squad as we build for next year and beyond," he said.

"She's still young but is already an international and state representative with plenty of untapped potential. We're keen to see what she can achieve in black, white and blue."

Born in Brisbane, Polata represented Queensland at the under-17 national rugby sevens championships before signing a development deal with the Broncos.

The Redbank Bears junior has scored three NRLW tries in a promising career to date. She won selection in the Australian Prime Minister's XIII team in 2023.
