Continuing a proud tradition, the Sharks will support major partner Zambrero's mission to help end world hunger by packing nutritious meals on Plate 4 Plate Day (Thursday, October 16).
Sharks staff will join a collection of volunteers at Carriageworks in Sydney to assemble meals. Packing sites will also be set up in Canberra, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Gold Coast, Townsville and Hobart, all contributing to this year's goal of packing 1,000,000 meals for communities in need.
The meal kits, which contain rice, lentils, soy and 23 essential vitamins and nutrients, will be distributed internationally by Zambrero's food partner Rise Against Hunger.
Plate 4 Plate is the brainchild of Dr Sam Prince, who wanted to make a difference when he founded Zambrero as a 21-year-old medical student in Canberra. So far, the 'Feel Good Mex' chain has donated more than 95 million meals.
Those who can't volunteer to pack meals can still contribute by simply eating at Zambrero on Plate 4 Plate Day, with donations doubled for every burrito, bowl, Zam Box or retail item purchased at all 300-plus restaurants or online.
The Sharks have taken part in the initiative since 2022, with NRLW stars Emma Verran and Jada Taylor donning hair nets and gloves at last year's event.
"On Plate 4 Plate Day, we get to be hands on and pack meals. This year, we've doubled our target and plan to pack one million meals across the country," Zambrero Australia CEO Matt Kenny said.
"We're lucky to have such great partners, like the Sharks, who come and support us on the day."
The importance of the cause is emphasised by some sobering statistics:
- 733 million people globally are still affected by hunger every day.
- Every 15 seconds a child dies from malnutrition's effects.
