Cronulla's Harvey Norman NSW Women's Premiership side kicked off their season with a solid 26-18 victory in a tough match against Parramatta on Thursday night at Sharks Stadium.
The Sharks trailed 12-10 at half-time but scored three tries to the Eels' two after the break to open their account in gritty fashion in an NRLW curtain-raiser. Promising lock Stephanie Faulkner scored a decisive double.
An early mistake by Parramatta after a kick from Olivia Herman allowed Cronulla to move into prime try-scoring range and centre Marewa Samson powered over for the first try of the year. Five-eighth Ella Ropata was unable to convert, the score remaining 4-0.
An impressive attacking set after points gave Faulkner the opportunity to cross again for the hosts. Ropata added the extras, giving Cronulla a 10-point lead after six minutes.
Poor discipline from the Sharks invited the Eels into dominant field position but committed defence held the away team out.
Parramatta's attack eventually proved too much and in the 18th minute winger Ella Carlisle touched down in the corner. Winger Tegan Long slotted the additional two points, bringing this match back to a four-point ball-game.
After an error from Cronulla turned over possession, Eels winger Georgia Willey looked to be a sure chance of scoring. However, desperation from Sharks hooker Koffi Brookfield saved a four-pointer.
Off the back of a kick, miscommunication from Cronulla caused an error and allowed Carlisle to snag her second of the night six minutes before the break. Long converted again and put the away side in front heading into the break.
To open the second-half scoring, Sharks interchange player Genevieve Mafi barged her way under the posts. Ropata converted, restoring Cronulla's lead.
The Eels struck back in the 55th minute with second-rower Alana O'Loughlin bullocking over. Long again converted to put Parramatta ahead.
Moments later, the Sharks attacked dominantly to lay the platform for Faulkner to collect a well-earned double. Ropata slotted the kick, handing the Sharks a 22-18 advantage.
Following a penalty in the 65th minute, Cronulla capitalised with winger Tia-Jordyn Vasilovski sliding across to seal the result.
The HNWP Sharks will face Mounties at GIO Stadium next Saturday in another NRLW curtain-raiser as they look to make it two from two.
