Sharks prop Tom Hazelton will be sidelined for up to three months after undergoing surgery to correct a sternoclavicular joint injury suffered in the round 10 match against Manly at Four Pines Park.

The injury and lengthy recovery time is a frustrating setback for one of the Sharks most popular and consistent performers.

The surgery, which took place on Tuesday, came after Hazelton underwent a series of reviews with shoulder specialists. His return to play estimate is currently 12 weeks.

Hazelton suffered the sternoclavicular joint injury, also known as a collarbone joint injury, after landing awkwardly when in possession of the ball and tackled in the Sharks win over the Sea Eagles.

While the long-term injury to Hazelton is disappointing for the player and the team, in some positive news the Sharks are hopeful of having the likes of Toby Rudolf, Teig Wilton and Sione Katoa available to return to the field in the coming weeks after spending extended periods on the sideline.
