Sharks playmaker Georgia Hannaway will achieve a lifelong dream after being selected to make her State of Origin debut as Queensland aim to avoid a series whitewash next Thursday night.

The dynamic 24-year-old has been chosen to wear the No.14 jersey as a bench utility for the clash at McDonald Jones Stadium in Newcastle on May 29.

The former rugby sevens star turned NRLW gun will come up against her Cronulla teammates Emma Verran, Tiana Penitani Gray and Ellie Johnston, who have played key roles in helping NSW establish a 2-0 series lead.

Hannaway's selection comes after an outstanding 2024 campaign in which she secured Cronulla's NRLW Rookie of the Year award with four try assists and a try in seven games. She started at five-eighth in the grand final against the Roosters.

"It's something I've wanted to do since I was a little kid so I'm ready to pull that jersey on and play for my state," Hannaway told sharks.com.au.

After being named 18th player for game one and included in the extended squad for game two, Hannaway will finally receive a well-deserved opportunity.

"It meant everything to me," Hannaway said after answering the call from Maroons coach Tahnee Norris on Wednesday morning.

Hannaway believes the fact the Sharks have four players representing them in the Origin arena reflects the strength of the systems and culture at the club.

"It shows how good a development (program) we have got here at the Sharks ... We've got great coaching and great staff who really push us each training session," the Brisbane-born Hannaway said.

Hannaway's teammates are beyond stoked for her – though the banter involving the NSW and Queensland contingents is rife.

The NRLW squad was quick to celebrate with Hannaway on Wednesday night as they came together for the club's media day at Sharks Stadium.

"I think I'll be fangirling a little bit when she comes onto the field," Cronulla captain Penitani Gray said.

"For her to finally get this recognition and get an Origin debut is so deserving."

Hannaway declared she "loves the rivalry" between the states.

After wrapping up the Origin series, the Sharks quartet will get stuck into pre-season training ahead of their opening NRLW match against the Eels at Sharks Stadium on Thursday, July 3.
