Flegg Sharks home in field goal thriller

A Manaia Waitere field goal with the full time siren sounding the background has seen the Jersey Flegg Sharks score a thrilling 15-14 victory over the Bulldogs in their round five clash at PointsBet Stadium.

The match between two undefeated teams went down to the wire, with Waitere going from villain to hero in the space of two minutes, the Sharks half back penalised for a high tackle, with the resulting two points levelling the score, before his perfectly struck field goal from 35 metres out seeing his team emerge at the winners.

In a high quality contest dominated by the defence of both teams, two tries to Sharks winger Cain Barnes and a Max Riolo conversion were the only points in the first half as the home team went to the break up by 10-0.

The Bulldogs were on the board five minutes into the second period to cut the margin to four at 10-6, but it would be the Sharks who would push their lead back out to eight, Riolo backing up a line break by fullback Chaz Jarvis, then beating the cover in a 40 sprint to the line.

In an evenly fought contest the Bulldogs pulled within two following their second converted try of the afternoon, before the 68th minute penalty goal levelled the scores.

From the ensuing kick-off backrower Toby Boothroyd charged down a last tackle kick, before two strong ball carries from props Salesi Ataata then Lachlan Crouch set up Waitere for the match winner.

The victory for the Sharks was their fourth in as many matches, with their next game against the Roosters in round seven following a bye in round six.
