Beloved mascot ‘Hammerheads’ into retirement

As the Cronulla Sharks prepare for old boys’ round on Sunday, one old boy has announced he will ‘Hammerhead’ into retirement following the clash.

It's not because he's getting too old, nor because he's losing his bite. No, it's because his suit is broken, and he's been scaring the bejesus out of children for over a decade.

It's a sad day for MC Hammerhead, but let's be real, this was bound to happen sooner or later. The poor guy has been trotting around in the same raggedy outfit for years now, and it's no surprise that he's finally given up the ghost. OH&S anyone?

But let's not dwell on the negative, Sharks fans. Instead, let's take a moment to remember all the good times we’ve had with our beloved ‘MC’.

Remember when he led the team out onto the field at the 2016 Grand Final, his fins flapping in the wind? Or when he busted out his signature dance moves during halftime? Or when he pretended to eat the opposition's mascot? Classic MC Hammerhead.

But now it's time to say goodbye. The kids might be terrified of him, but they're probably better off without a terrifying, seven-foot-tall hammerhead shark looming over them on game day.

This decision has sent shockwaves throughout the NRL community, as MC Hammerhead has been a staple of our game day experience for over a decade. Fans are understandably upset by the news, with many taking to social media to express their dismay.

"How could they do this to us?” wrote one fan on Twitter. "This is an absolute disgrace," wrote another.

While the retirement of MC Hammerhead is certainly a sad moment for Sharks fans, we must remember that mascots come and go. Speaking of which, how good are our new mascots ‘Wanda’ and an upgraded ‘Reefy’!

The news of MC Hammerhead's retirement has also sparked rumours that the Sharks are planning to rebrand their entire franchise. Some have speculated that the team could be changing its name to the Cronulla Sharks with Legs. Rest assured. We’re not changing a thing.

Let’s enjoy these last moments with MC Hammerhead on Sunday and give him the send-off he deserves. We'll always have a special place in our hearts for the Hammerhead.

He may be retiring, but he'll always be a legend in our eyes.

Farewell*, old friend.

*MC Hammerhead will still be with us, making an appearance each year during ‘Old Boys’ round!
