Sione re-signs

Quietly spoken, yet known for his spectacular try finishes, Sharks winger and Tongan international Sione Katoa has signed a three-year contract extension with the Cronulla club.

Already secured for the current season, Katoa will now remain in Sharks colours through until at least the end of 2026.

Katoa’s signature adds to that of recently signed Sharks backline stars including Jesse Ramien, Ronaldo Mulitalo, Siosifa Talakai and talented youngster Sam Stonestreet.

Having found a home in the Shire since joining the Sharks in 2017, Katoa was pleased to have his immediate playing future sorted ahead of another big match for his team this weekend.

“I love being a member of this team and to be representing this club and I’m excited to have been able to extend my time here for another three years with this new contract,” Katoa said.

“I believe we are building something special here at the Sharks under Fitzy and the coaching staff and I’m really looking forward to playing my part not only this season but also in the years to come.”

A member of the 2017 NYC Team of the Year during a year in which he was also the Holden Cup competition’s leading try scorer, Katoa would graduate into the senior ranks, playing a major role in the success of the Newtown Jets who claimed both the NSW Cup and National Championship trophies in 2019.

From there he cemented a place in the Sharks NRL team, Katoa enjoying his breakout season in 2020 when he scored a team high 16 tries in 19 matches.

Since making his top grade debut in round one of the 2018 season, Katoa has played 67 NRL matches, scoring 47 tries in what represents an exceptional strike rate.

Katoa will again take his place in the team this weekend on the end of the Sharks backline for what shapes as a crucial round five encounter against the visiting New Zealand Warriors.
