Jets soar to impressive win over Eels

The Jets got off to a flyer, then ran away with the game in the second half in continuing their strong start to their 2023 campaign.

The Newtown side went up 18-0 early, took a six-point lead to half time, before an avalanche of late tries saw them record a 42-12 win over the Eels to make it two from two to kick off their season.

Young Sharks winger Sam Stonestreet notched a try-scoring hattrick, his success built on the work of the men in the middle, with the like of Caleb Uele, hooker Jayden Berrell and five eighth Daniel Atkinson turning in outstanding performances.

The Jets managed to get off to a fast start, a try to Caleb Uele who crashed over after charging onto a short pass from Jayden Berrell and following the Mawene Hiroti conversion after eight minutes it was 6-0.

The Newtown side didn’t have to wait long for their second four-pointer of the afternoon, Berrell picking up a loose Eels pass before winning a 45-metre dash to the try line and with Hiroti adding the extras it was 12-0 Jets.

Another fortuitous try to the Jets, this time when Sam Stonestreet planted the ball down after an in-goal error from the Eels and it was 18-0 and the Newtown team looked like running away with the game.

A shift in momentum however saw the Eels gain some field position and an improved share of possession, with Parramatta posting first points in the 25th minute of the match when rangy forward  Toni Mataele showed good strength to touch down adjacent to the uprights.

Not long after the Eels were in again, five eighth Brendan Hands winning the race to a Jacob Arthur grubber kick and after two successful conversions it was a contest once more at 18-12, a score which would hold until the half time break.

The second 40 began with neither team able to assert any real dominance, but it would be the Jets who were next to score, a line break down the eastern touchline saw Jacob Gagan put Stonestreet into space, with the Jets winger slinging a pass inside for Charbel Tasipale to score.

Again Hiroti was on target and the Jets had opened up a 24-12 lead with a touch over 20 minutes of the match remaining.

Almost from that point the Jets took control, winger Josh Mansour crossing in the north-western corner, before two tries to Stonestreet, the first on the end of a backline move, the second a long range effort when the local junior scooped up the ball and race 80 metres to score under the uprights.

Hiroti was perfect with the boot, kicking seven from seven in the match.

Next up for the Jets is a game against the Raiders in Canberra next Sunday.
