It was cold, wet and windy, but none of that really mattered after the Jersey Flegg Sharks put a series of near misses behind them in notching an 18-16 win over Manly in their round 15 match at 4 Pines Park at Brookvale on Saturday.
The Sharks have had numerous winning chances in their last five outings, but could only boast a draw back in round nine to show for their efforts, however in closing out a narrow victory over the Sea Eagles have remained in touch with the other finals contenders.
Scoring early through Joniah Lualua in just the third minute the Sharks gained the early ascendency, although the scores were locked up at 6-all when the Sea Eagles responded shortly after.
The two teams traded converted tries in the later stages of the first half as they went to the break locked up at 12-all, before the second period turned into a war of attrition in the miserable weather conditions.
Manly would take the lead with a try in the 41st minute, but it was a Semisi Sikei touchdown some 10 minutes later, converted by Lualua who was a perfect three from three with the boot on the day, which proved the match winner as the Sharks held on to record their fifth win of the 2021 season.
With the two competition points the Sharks jumped one spot to be sixth on the competition table and now have two weeks, with a rest for this weekend’s rep round and a bye in round 16, before taking on Souths at Redfern Oval in round 17.
That match is scheduled for a 12.15 kick off on Sunday, July 11. (Stay tuned to Sharks media in case of day, time or venue changes).
