Disappointing Jets downed by Raiders

Despite the inclusion of a number of Sharks contracted players, the Newtown Jets have gone down by 20-10 to the Canberra Raiders.

In a match played at Henson Park which featured NRL squad members from both clubs due to the NRL bye, the Raiders built on a 12-6 half time advantage in scoring their second victory over the Newtown side in 2021.

The Raiders scored first, then in a hard-fought first half the Jets would respond, winger Edward Aiono replying, the try converted by Luke Metcalf in levelling the scores.

However just when the team appeared to be headed to half time with the scores locked up, a Canberra try would send the visitors to the break up by six.

Hard running Sharks back rower Siosifa Talakai would be next to cross in narrowing the margin to just two at 12-10 with still 20 minutes of the match left on the clock, but that would be as close as the Jets would get, two more Canberra touchdown sealing the win, one which sees the Newtown side slip to their six loss of the season.

Next up for the Jets is a match against the first-placed Penrith Panthers in a match scheduled for Henson Park on Saturday.
