Jets grounded by a red-hot Raiders

A Newtown Jets side depleted due to the injuries affecting the Sharks NRL side, have been thumped 60-20 by the Raiders in Canberra.

It was a match which through the first half didn't give an indication of what was to come, the two teams trading the lead until the Raiders went to the break up by 24-16, however the Jets had no answer in the second 40, conceded six more tries in the 10-try rout.

The Newtown side could hardly foresee what was to come when Sharks development player Luke Metcalf crossed in the second minute of the game, and although they gave up that advantage with a Canberra try just five minutes later, the Jets would go back on top when stocky winger Edward Aiono scored.

The Raiders from that point would assert control with three tries before the break, five-eight Jack Williams getting one back for the Newtown team, with the game somewhat in the balance with eight points separating the teams at half time.

But from there the Jets had no answer, a procession of Canberra tries, all converted by Brad Schneider who kicked 10 from 10 on the day, leaving the Newtown boys with a long trip home after the 10 tries to four drubbing.

With the Sharks still battling injury and suspension, help from the Jets partner club may not yet be on the way, with Newtown needing to regroup ahead of their round five match against the North Sydney Bears next Sunday.
