Matthews Sharks smashed by Magpies

The Matthews Cup Sharks have fallen out of finals contention after suffering a 36-6 defeat to Western Suburbs.

The under-17 Sharks were outgunned by an enthusiastic Magpies side, conceding seven tries in the disappointing loss.

The teams went to half time trailing by 14-0 and after an error from the second period kickoff gifted their opponents the ball and field position, with another try resulting, the Sharks then trailed 18-0 and had it all to do.

In the end the lone bright spot was a try to winger Kurt Montgomery, set up by a long cut-out pass from  Dylan Christensen, the Sharks half back adding the extra two points with a sideline conversion.

The loss see the Sharks slip three points outside the top six, leaving them now needing two wins against the Eels and Panthers in their final two matches and results to go their way should they hope top qualify for the Matthews Cup finals.

The Sharks are away to the Panthers next week.
