Bushfire auction: An ‘immortal’ offering

The second wave of Sharks memorabilia has hit our auction site, with two Club Immortals donating special personal items in doing what they can to assist those affected by the recent bush fires.

In amazingly generous gestures, Gavin Miller, the Sharks great ball-playing backrower of the 1980’s and 90’s, has offered his 1989 Dally M Forward of the Year trophy, while 1973 Sharks Captain-Coach Tommy Bishop is donating his 1968 Great Britain jersey, the pair doing so in the hope the monies raised can benefit a club, community or individual doing it tough on the NSW South Coast after fires ravaged the area in early January.

The Dally M Player of the Year in both 1988 and 1989, Miller’s Forward of the Year trophy is a one-off, presented to him following a year when he was named the best and most influential player of the 1989 season.

In addition, Miller also presented the Sharks with a framed Legends jersey, featuring the signatures and names of a number of former great of the Cronulla Club from the 1970’s and ‘80’s.

The Legends jersey, signed by the likes of Miller, Bishop, Cliff Watson, Andrew Ettingshausen, Steve Kneen, Greg Pierce and others, has also been made available in the Sharks Bushfire Appeal auction.

And while Miller’s Dally M and the Legends Jersey will undoubtedly attract many interested bidders, so too should Tommy Bishop’s 1968 Great Britain Test Jersey.

The Sharks captain-coach in their Grand Final season of 1973, Bishop played 15 matches for Great Britain from 1966 until 1969 when he made the decision to move to Australia and link with Cronulla.

An original Club Immortal, Bishop played for and coached the Sharks with distinction, guiding them into the 1973 competition decider, a match which has since been recognised as one of the most brutal in the history of the game.

All funds raised will be specifically targeted to assist South Coast clubs, football and otherwise, in an effort to help those communities affected by the bush fire crisis.
