The Newtown Jets celebrated rugby league’s first-ever Pride and Diversity Day by turning on a vintage performance in front of their loyal home crowd.

The Jets beat a strong Wentworthville team 22-10 in the 13th round of the Canterbury Cup played at Henson Park on Saturday.

Wentworthville, reinforced by nine players with considerable NRL match experience, dominated the opening 20 minutes but Newtown’s tight defence restricted them to a 4-0 lead. The Jets in turn cut loose in the game’s second quarter and scored three tries to take a 16-4 lead into halftime.

The second half was fiercely contested, with Wenty trailing 16-10 for an extended period but unable to break through the committed and disciplined Jets defence. Newtown centre Matt Evans scored a spectacular try three minutes out from fulltime to seal a memorable Jets victory.

On a day when the Jets worked hard as a team, Jimmy Jolliffe, Billy Magoulias and Josh Carr were the best of the forwards, while in the backs Jack A. Williams, Will Kennedy and Luke Polselli deserve special mention.

Newtown plays away to Mounties next Saturday, 15th June, in a 14th round Canterbury Cup fixture at the Aubrey Keech Reserve at 3.00pm.
