2019 Sharks Skills Development Program – register now!

To include six intensive sessions, starting on March 4, the Sharks Skills Development Program (SDP) is set to again benefit junior players of all skill levels as the perfect lead in to the 2019 JRL season.

A program designed by Sharks Academy and Talent Identification Manager Glenn Brailey, the coach of the 2015 National Championship winning Sharks Matthews Cup side, SDP returns in 2019 while continuing with the formula that has made it a raging success in recent years.

A fun and exciting six-week program, the SDP will again place a high emphasis on safe tackling techniques and skill development, all conducted with a unique Sharks element.

Brailey will coordinate a group of qualified Sharks academy coaches, with the likes of new recruit Shaun Johnson, Jillaroo Corban McGregor and other Sharks NRL squad members to add their time and expertise as guests during the six-week training block as program ambassadors.

The experienced and highly credentialed coaches and players will deliver a comprehensive program that gives participants a taste of what they can expect if graduating into future Sharks Academy programs, with the aim to make top level coaching available to all junior players, both boys and girls, within the local rugby league community.

The 2019 SDP places a specific focus on tackling technique, including safe body positioning, tackle mechanics and safe falling practices, while also covering attacking aspects of the game, areas such as advanced catch/pass technique, methods of evasion and line running, as well as creating overlaps and using numbers.

"We will work on both basic and complex skill development but learning how to tackle safely and effectively is crucial and will form a large part of program as well," Brailey said.

"The SDP is an outstanding introduction for our local juniors into some advanced coaching techniques, it is the first step towards getting boys and girls into our programs and it helps to show them what is down the track if they progress to a higher level," Brailey added.

The updated Sharks SPD is ideal for both beginners and experienced players, suitable for those with an ambition to one day represent in the Sharks Junior Rep or Academy squads, or for youngsters to just up skill and enjoy an advanced coaching experience prior to the new junior league season getting underway.

Open to boys ages 6 to 12 and girls 6-15, where practical the program will see players train in groups of the same age or with players of similar skill level. Be quick to register as the early bird price of $179 is only available till midnight Thursday 14 February before the standard registration price of $205 commences, Friday, 15 February.

Included in the registration, participants will receive a Shark Net membership which includes an official Sharks cap, a Sharks SDP training singlet and a drink bottle. The first 50 to register also receive a Sharks 'money can't buy' game day experience.
