Sharks play host to Wigan

It can’t quite be billed as a re-match, however a training scrimmage session against their World Club Challenge conquerors the Wigan Warriors, shapes as an interesting event on the Sharks pre-season schedule.

To be held at Southern Cross Group Stadium on February 14, the training scrimmage will feature many of Cronulla’s NRL stars, opposed by the leading Wigan players, just three days out from Sharks opening trial match of 2018.

For the uninitiated, a scrimmage session simulates match situations, with defensive contact made without the intensity associated with a regular game day played for points, or in relation to the last time these two teams met, with a World Club Championship on the line.

This time last year the roles were reversed and it was the Sharks doing the travelling, heading to the UK for the final of the 2017 World Club Challenge, a match in which the Wigan Warriors came out as victors.

In Australia to play the South Sydney Rabbitohs in a trial match, Wigan have been granted access to the Sharks gymnasium facilities and following a strength session will then also use the scrimmage as a part of their pre-season preparations.

The training session will be open to Sharks members, as well as those from the visiting Wigan supporters group, with kick-off time estimated to be around 5.00pm, with more information to follow soon.

Sharks Membership staff will be on hand at the training scrimmage for any Sharks fans not yet committed as Members and wanted to sign up ahead of the 2018 season.

The Sharks first trial of 2018 is scheduled for Southern Cross Group Stadium on Saturday, February 17.

The trial will see the Sharks play the Manly Sea Eagles in Jersey Flegg under-20’s, NSW Cup and NRL trials. First game is at 3.05pm, with the NRL trial starting at 7.30pm.
