Family Fun Day at Henson Park, which includes a special fund-raising day for the Mark Hughes Foundation, promises plenty of activity behind the fence, while on the playing field the Newtown Jets face another serious test in their bid to push for a finals berth.

Clinging to eighth spot on the Intrust Super Premiership ladder the Jets scored a crucial two-point win over fellow finals contenders the Newcastle Knights last week, with more of the same commitment needed on Saturday afternoon when they face Blacktown Workers-Sea Eagles.

With the Sharks minus five Origin players, the strain filters down to the Newtown Jets, with new names and combinations included for the game on Saturday after several regulars were required in the NRL.

With no Daniel Mortimer and Fa’amanu Brown in the Jets halves coach Greg Matterson has opted for reliable utility Jason Shirnack, alongside the versatile Leigh Higgins in the six and sever jerseys, with Brent Anderson another relatively new face on the wing in place of Edrick Lee.

The forward pack is young but eager, with Kurt Dillon, Jack Williams and Jaimin Jolliffe amongst those doing a good job for the Jets in recent matches.

Last week against Newcastle Dillon ran for 139 metres and made 34 tackles in a productive 59-minute performance, while his front rower partner Jolliffe was just as busy, carrying the ball for 126 metres and completing 36 tackles in his 53-minute stint.

While the result will be paramount, also of importance on Saturday will be Newtown’s efforts to assist the Mark Hughes Foundation to raise funds to promote research, to heighten awareness of and to support brain cancer patients.

As the Mark Hughes Foundation has sold out of their special beanies, the Newtown RLFC will be selling Jets beanies with 50% of the proceeds going directly to the Mark Hughes Foundation. In addition, there will be a donation drive on the day.
