In dismal conditions at WIN Stadium in Wollongong the Newtown Jets have slipped to a second consecutive loss in going down by 22-12 to Illawarra.

In a match played against the defending Instrust Super Premiership champions the Jets started strongly with a third minute try but from there they would struggle to go with the Illawarra side.

The Jets battled away in the first half and would have given themselves hope of a positive result when the teams went to half time at 6-point apiece, but from there it all went the way of the home team.

Illawarra would forge a 22-6 lead before a late try to winger Leigh Higgins narrowed the final marginof defeat.

Tony Williams turned out for the Jets but unfortunately left the field early with an as yet undisclosed injury, one which is set to keep him out of contention for a berth in the Sharks team to play the Dragons.

In his first game for Newtown in 2017, Fa'amanu Brown told the NSWRL website; “It was quite tough again this week to have fresh halves, it’s been the case for the past three weeks,” Brown said in relation to Daniel Mortimer being sidelined with injury.

“Whoever drops back (from the Sharks’ NRL Squad), we just have to do our job, and work hard while we do it.

“The game was there to be won until late on in that second half. We just didn’t make the most of our opportunities.”

The Jets will now go back to the drawing board where they will try to get their season headed in the right direction next Saturday when they play the Wests Tigers at Campbelltown Stadium.
