SHARKS v Raiders – By The Numbers

By Jeff Petersen

It’s been a 15-month wait since we last saw the Raiders visit Remondis with the Sharks playing some great attacking football in a rousing 30-20 win. Our home record is an impressive 20 wins from 28 starts and averaging 22 points a game against Canberra, and so may it continue.

Our impressive record has continued on from the first-ever game played at Seiffert Oval in 1982, when Mick Mullane’s hat-trick of tries helped the Sharks to a 44-5 win. That year also resulted in our first-ever win at home by 34-5, a game in which Mick Mullane bagged 3 tries and Steve Rogers kicked 8 goals, which still remains the club record for most goals in a game.

Three tries in a game against the Raiders seemed to be the trend in the decades to follow, with Colin Best, Ben Pomeroy, Misi Taulapapa and David Simmons also scoring game hat-tricks.

ET’s tally of 14 tries in his career against the Raiders included 5 tries in 5 consecutive home games. With six tries for the Sharks in home games he ties with Colin Best as our most productive try scorers.

Cronulla’s links with Canberra conjure up many wonderful player memories and one more notable recollection in former Sharks coach Ricky Stuart. Ricky was at the Cronulla helm from 2007 to mid-season 2010, leading the Sharks to a 45% win percentage (15 wins from 33 games).

A list of Cronulla/Canberra players that have traversed the two clubs is an impressive one. Some of those players have included Matt Corkery, Craig Dimond, Jason Williams, Andrew Lomu, Brett Kelly, Bronx Goodwin, Stuart Flanagan, Blake Ferguson and Todd Carney via the Roosters.

Our last home game versus the Raiders was a 30-20 victory on Sunday, May 13, 2013. The Sharks and Raiders line-ups that day in front of 12,130 fans were: 1.Fullback: Michael Gordon; 2.Wing: Sosaia Feki, 3.Centre: Ben Pomeroy, 4.Centre: Jonathan Wright, 5.Wing: Beau Ryan; 6.Five-Eighth: Todd Carney, 7.Halfback: Jeff Robson; 13.Lock: Chris Heighington, 12.Second Row: Wade Graham (Captain), 16.Second Row: Jayson Bukuya, 10.Front Row: Ben Ross, 9.Hooker: John Morris, 15.Front Row: Sam Tagataese. Interchange: 8.Andrew Fifita, 14.Isaac De Gois, 17.Anthony Tupou, 21.Tyrone Peachey.

Raiders: 1.Fullback: Reece Robinson; 2.Wing: Sandor Earl, 3.Centre: Jack Wighton, 4.Centre: Blake Ferguson, 5.Wing: Edrick Lee; 6.Five-Eighth: Terry Campese (Captain), 7.Halfback: Josh McCrone; 13.Lock: Shaun Fensom, 12.Second Row: Josh Papalii, 11.Second Row: Joel Edwards, 10.Front Row: Brett White, 9.Hooker: Matt McIlwrick, 8.Front Row: David Shillington. Interchange: 14.Anthony Milford, 15.Joe Picker, 16.Dane Tilse, 17.Paul Vaughan.

Referees: Adam Devcich & Chris James.

One prominent piece of Sharks/Raiders trivia concerns front rower Bryce Gibbs, whose first and only try for the Sharks was in the Canberra Rd 26 away game of 2013. It was his first try for the Sharks and also his first 4-pointer since scoring in the 2005 Grand Final for Wests Tigers.

Go Sharks!
