He started the year in the World Club Challenge as a winger, was then used in the centres, often slotted into the back row, and came off the bench whenever and wherever needed, playing all positions to a high level, with Kurt Capewell’s versatility a definite asset to the Sharks in 2017.
While he found it difficult to tie down a regular spot in the 17 each week, Capewell managed to play 16 games during the year with his long-striding running style presenting its challenges to opposition defences.
Still just 24 years of age, with his best football in front of him, locking down a starting position will be his next assignment and with what Capewell produced in 2017 there’s no reason that won’t happen sooner rather than later.
Attracted some interest from opposition clubs for 2018 but in a positive for the Sharks re-signed and will remain in the Shire, with Capewell to push for more regular game time in the years ahead.
Season highlight: Often used off the bench, however in one of his starting assignments Capewell showed what he is capable of with a man of the match performance. In the round 15 win over the Tigers Capewell played in the centres, and in 80 minutes would score two tries, take 22 runs for 251 metres, make four line breaks and have one try assist.
