Friday night was a special night for Sharks skipper Paul Gallen, as he became only the second player ever to play 300 NRL games for the Cronulla side.
The achievement is no mean feat, with determination and perseverance over the course of a career enabling a player to reach such a milestone.
Club’s take this very seriously. And so they should, the achievement is phenomenal.
When the player is presented their jersey prior to the milestone match, most NRL coaches call on a club great or someone close to the player to present the jersey and say a few words of encouragement and inspiration.
Last night was no different.
Or was it…
Presenting Paul Gallen’s jersey last night was someone very close to him. It was someone who has played a part in his career. It was someone who he plays for week-in, week-out.
It was his son Kody.
The moment was very special for not only Gallen and his family, who were also in the dressing sheds, however the Club as a whole.
This little gesture shows the measure of the man Paul Gallen, and the character he possesses to want to make the occasion just as much about his family as himself.
He truly is a special individual.
Credit should also go to Shane Flanagan for seeing this as a great moment in the history of the Club.
Despite the result last night, when Gal’s career does come to an end, this moment will be something he will be able to look back at and smile.
To have his son and best friend there for such a moment was something special.
