Without a handful of their regulars the Newtown Jets have failed to match the Blacktown Workers-Sea Eagles in slumping to a 42-18 defeat.
After falling behind 12-0 early the Jets battled back, enjoying an improved share of possession and when one of their most consistent performers in Kurt Dillon crashed over at 12-6 they were back in the contest.
Blacktown, the Intrust Super Premiership partners of the Manly Sea Eagles, extended their lead to 12 with a converted try however a four pointer to Saulala Houma and conversion by Matt Evans and Newtown had every reason to be optimistic as they went to the break down by just six at 18-12 behind.
Unfortunately for the Jets that would be as close as they came to their opponents.
A try six minutes into the second half doubled the Sea Eagles lead and they continued their dominance for the remainder of the match.
With the score 42-12 Newtown crossed for a consolation try in the final minutes as a result of a clever solo effort from five eighth Leigh Higgins but the two competition points were long gone.
Despite the loss the Jets still cling to eighth spot on the ISP ladder however they will need to start stringing some wins together if they hope to stay there during the back end of the season.
The Newtown Jets are back on deck next Saturday when they host the Wests Tigers at Henson Park. Kick off will be at 3.00pm.
