Arriving back in Sydney on Wednesday ahead of the NRL’s season launch, Sharks Captain Paul Gallen gave his blessing to hooker-in-waiting Jayden Brailey, ahead of the side’s Round 1 clash with the Broncos.

With Brailey having made his first appearance in the Sharks top grade in the World Club Challenge versus Wigan, Captain Gallen gave his blessing to the local junior, saying he’s ready to fill the role left vacant by Michael Ennis’ retirement.

“I thought Jayden Brailey did a fantastic job, I think he showed that he’s going to be our number nine,” Gallen said.

“That’s not up to me though, Flano makes that decision… but he played really really well.

“He’s not going to replace Michael Ennis straight away; he’s probably going to need a season or two to build into that role.

“But put it this way, that game [the World Club Challenge], that was one of the most physical, intense games I’ve ever played in, and I think he handled it really well.”

Speaking with Sky Sports Radio’s Big Sports Breakfast, Gallen also touched on the Sharks opening round fixture against Brisbane, and his form and fitness ahead of a big year defending the NRL title.
