The Cronulla Sharks and the Wests Tigers NYC teams faced each other at Henson Park with the Sharks coming out resounding winners 52 - 4

It was a big weekend for our Sharks in the Junior Representative competitions, NYC trial and for Newtown in their Intrust Super Premiership trial with the Wests Tigers. See below a recap of the action from across the grades.

Tarsha Gale Cup #TGCup – Sharks 38 def. Sydney Indigenous Academy 0

The Sharks Under 18s women’s side got off to a perfect start in their Tarsha Gale Cup season with a big win over the Sydney Indigenous Academy side, running in 38-unanswered points to assert themselves as genuine TG Cup contenders.

It took just 29 seconds for the Sharks to open their account, with Captain Taylor Preston streaking the better part of 50 metres to touch down for the competition’s first try.

“It was great fun; everyone was a bit nervous to start off with but once we got out there we knew what we had to do,” Preston told NSWRL.com.au. “It gives me a lot of confidence for the season ahead – yeah, it was great to get a try in.”

Harold Matthews Cup #HMatts – Sharks 32 def. Sydney Roosters 18

The U16s Sharks recorded a big win over the Sydney Roosters, fighting back from being three-tries-to-one down inside the game’s opening quarter.

A try to bench forward Billy Burke on the stroke of the half-time siren set the wheels in motion for a big Sharks revival, as the Cronulla side ran in five unanswered tries on their way to a 14-point win.

SG Ball Cup #SGBall – Sharks 36 def. Sydney Roosters 14

The U18s Sharks rounded out a big afternoon for the Club’s junior representative stocks, making it three from three for the Cronulla sides with a 36 points to 14 win over the Roosters.

Running in seven tries to three, it was this special effort from half Luke Metcalf which epitomised the side’s performance.

NYC Trial – Sharks 52 def. Wests Tigers 4

Continuing on in the vain of form that saw them push deep into the 2016 NYC Finals, the U20s Sharks impressed in their outing against the young Tigers, running out commanding 13-tries-to-one victors at Henson Park.

Lead by half Kyle Flanagan, the Sharks attack clicked into gear from the opening whistle, with the side’s big outside backs – not least Josh Tuilagi – the beneficiaries en route to a big win.

Intrust Super Premiership Trial – Newtown 8 def. by Wests Tigers 20

The Newtown Jets couldn’t make it a clean sweep for the Sharks-affiliated sides on Saturday afternoon, with the Wests Tigers running out 20 points to 8 victors over the Blue Bags.

The Tigers ran in three-straight tries to take a 12-0 lead inside the game’s opening quarter of an hour, before Newtown hit back via Sharks Auckland Nines representative, Matt Evans.

It was a case of missed opportunities for the Jets, completing just 17 of 33 sets with ball in hand and kicking touch-in-goal on seven occasions.
