A 75-metre try in the last minute of the game has seen the Sharks Women’s Nines team score a 16-12 win.

Down by two points with time running out, two of the Sharks Jillaroos combined, with Allana Ferguson putting in a perfectly weighted kick for fullback Sam Bremner who raced away for the match winner.

The conversion after full-time meant very little with the Shark Girls already celebrating a memorable victory in the ground-breaking women’s clash.

The Sharks began strongly when Jade Etherden crashed over and despite the missed conversion the home team was up 4-0.

The Dragons fought back gamely to level the scores at four-apiece, before Ferguson showing outstanding speed and evasion sliced through and planted the ball down under the posts to make it 8-4 Sharks.

Maddi Studdon converted with a drop goal from in front and the Sharks had all the momentum at 10-4 ahead.

That six point advantage was short-lived however when the Dragons Australian rep Kezzie Apps scored a brilliant long range try to bridge the gap with the score standing at 10-8 Sharks at the half time break.

The second period began with the Dragons dominating field position and possession and as hard as they tried to hold firm the Sharks conceded a third try, the St George side grabbing their first lead of the night at 12-10 in front.

Camping in the Sharks half for long periods of the second half the Dragons looked like they might hold on for a narrow win, until the exciting finale and a touch of brilliance from Bremner and Ferguson swung the match in the Sharks favour.

The match was hailed as a huge success, with the women from both teams receiving a huge reception from the large crowd on hand at Southern Cross Group Stadium.

The Sharks have another Women’s Nines match planned for their star-studded squad. Stay tuned to the Sharks website for details of the match.
