The Sharks were pleased to lend their support to the Royal Australian Navy rugby league competition, an annual event which draws teams from across Australia.

Played on Wednesday at Captain Cook Oval adjacent to Southern Cross Group Stadium, the Sharks hosting the event was a strong example of the Club’s growing relationship with the Navy.

“We have challenged ourselves to be the club of choice in all that we do, from girls and boys picking their team through to major corporates and building excellent relationships with the armed forces is a key component of that,” said Jonathan Prosser, the Sharks Group GM for Strategy and Business Development.

“The event also recognises our role in the community, a community which is home to many Navy families. We hope to welcome many Navy people into our family as Members and to deepen the relationship the club has with the Navy over the years to come.”

After NRL Coach Shane Flanagan spoke to all teams at 8.30am on the morning of the tournament, the teams that had assembled from naval bases around Australia began a round robin event, with HMAS Choules winning through to the Grand Final match against the crew from HMAS Adelaide.

In a keenly contested championship match it was the team representing HMAS Choules which emerged victorious in claiming the 2016 Navy Rugby League crown.

Both HMAS Choules and HMAS Adelaide list their home port as Fleet Base East in Sydney.

The Cronulla-Sutherland Junior Rugby League Club De La Salle Caringbah opened their clubhouse doors and canteen facilities for the competitors and their support teams throughout the day.
