Sharks coaching staff collectively held their breath when it became obvious something had gone awry with the knee of winger Sosaia Feki right on the stroke of half time in Sunday’s game against the Panthers.

Training and medical staff rushed to his aid and assisted Feki off the field so he could be assessed and treated.

It was then much to the surprise of fans and commentators that Feki ran back down the tunnel and onto the field at Pepper Stadium for the start of the second half, with his knee strapped but showing no signs of discomfort.

Later reports emerged that Feki required up to a dozen stitches to repair a nasty cut, with the hard-running Kiwi showing his toughness in being able to play out the final 40 minutes of the match.

With an eight-day turn around, giving the wound plenty of time to heal, Feki is expected to be available to take on the Roosters next Monday night and is likely to be selected in the Sharks team when announced at 5.00pm today.

In other injury news his centre partner Ricky Leutele, missing from the Sharks win over the Panthers, is set to be sidelined for one more week with an ankle sprain.

Leutele suffered the injury in his teams’ round 17 match against the Parramatta Eels.

With Jack Bird to return to the team following his Origin commitments, and considering the strong performances from the likes of Mitch Brown and Kurt Capewell, the Sharks appeared to have Leutele’s absence covered at least in the short-term.

Other than the Feki cut, the Sharks came through the Panthers game with no further injury concerns, however they will be casting a keen eye on the Origin clash on Wednesday with five players involved in the match.

As for the extended Sharks squad, in some further good news, both Jacob Gagan and Junior Roqica successfully returned to the field last Saturday for the Newtown Jets after extended periods on the sideline.

Gagan has recovered from a hamstring strain, Roqica a foot problem.

Which leaves only Josh Cleeland on the injured list, however the half-five eighth is hopeful he will have overcome his ankle/foot injury before Saturday so he can get back on the field for the Jets in their game against the North Sydney Bears.

Stay tuned for the Sharks and Newtown teams to be announced later today.
