League-Touch Round 2 wrap

Jason Stanton

Sunday 22nd May saw League-Touch ‘raise the bar’ yet again. Como-Jannali hosted the day running 3 fields with Rugby League and LeagueTouch being played side-by-side. The LeagueTouch games featured ballkids & touch judges for the first time with the boys and girls of the shire showing off their skills.

This weeks featured game was in the girls 15’s division which saw Taren Point BLACK challenge Cronulla-Caringbah BLACK. Both teams were coming off wins in round1 so there was plenty of hype surrounding this game. Much of the talk was about the matchup of the Mullins twins against the Killick twins and a healthy crowd assembled on the hill to witness the contest.

Taren Point got out to a cracking start with Brooke Elliot linking with Isabelle and Georgia Mullins to dominate position and field position. After relentless pressure and sweeping passes from left to right, Mullins found a crack in the Cronulla Caringbah defence to open the scoring with a try and conversion. The last tackle options of the Titans were very clever and Cronulla-Caringbah had to contend with a mix of grubbers, chips and cross field kicks. At half time Taren Point led 6-0 and with lost opportunities they probably deserved a bigger lead.

This would come back to haunt the Titans in the second half as Cronulla-Caringbah came our firing. Coach Jeff Killick made some half time changes and the move of Lynda Howarth to fullback was a masterstroke. With extra possession the momentum swung to Cronulla-Caringbah and this allowed Jaime Chapman to take ahold of the game. After opening up the Titans left side defence she put on an amazing sidestep to beat the fullback and lock things up at 6-6. Chapman would again would be the catalyst for Cronulla-Caringbah’s second try, this time finding space around the ruck to score and with Imogen Killick’s 4 pointer soon after the lead was quickly out to 16-6.

Taren Point rallied and it got straight back into the game with the Mullins twins leading the way. Isabelle Mullins showed amazing passing and evasive skills to continually pepper the Cronulla-Caringbah scoreline. A great try got the score back to 16-12 and everyone was on the edge of their seats as Titans tried to steal the game in the final moments. Twice the Titans were disallowed tries and only the defence of Lynda Howarth would hold them out. In the end, some great resilence and a little luck saw Cronulla-Caringbah run out winners and they need sit unbeaten on top of the ladder.

Player of the Match: Jaime Chapman (Cronulla-Caringbah)
