It was a tragic accident when Knights player Alex McKinnon suffered a serious spinal injury in a match against the Melbourne Storm, with his rugby league dreams shattered and his future uncertain.

However in spite of the devastating setback McKinnon has shown amazing character and courage in the face of adversity.

Now in support of McKinnon and the on-going medical and rehabilitation costs he is certain to face, the NRL has dedicated round 19 as the RiseForAlex round.

A range of fundraising activities are planned, with one such initiative seeing $1 from every entry ticket sold at NRL games across the weekend to be donated to the cause.

Throwing their support behind RiseForAlex the Sharks are also on board, with game day fundraising, a pre-kick off ceremony and other activities planned for Friday night.

For this week the Sharks have also ‘retired’ the number 16 jersey for this weeks match against the Cowboys in respect to Alex, with 16 being the number he wore when injured.

In addition to the Chronic Pain Australia logo appearing on the front of the jersey, the Sharks playing strip will also prominently feature RiseForAlex across the back.

And the Sharks are providing fans a chance to contribute to the RiseForAlex fund while at the same time offering an opportunity to own a unique piece of club memorabilia, with the 17 match-worn jerseys to be auctioned.

Proceeds from the auction will go to the RiseForAlex fund.

Skipper Wade Graham’s number 12, the 11 to be worn by Luke Lewis, Andrew Fifita’s number 8 and the 6 jersey of young gun Fa’amanu Brown, so impressive in his short NRL career to date, just an example of some of the jerseys available for you to own.

The 17 match worn jerseys will be presented to the successful bidders in a specially designed display box.

Auction is now open, closes 5.00pm next Wednesday, July 23.

Follow the link, make a bid, join the rugby league community in supporting an outstanding cause and own a unique Sharks memorabilia item.

NOTE: Also on the same auction link is another unique item and again the proceeds will be going to the RiseForAlex fund.

The Sharks had last Sunday's game ball from the match against the Knights personally signed by Wayne Bennett after what was his 700th game as an NRL coach.

This special collector’s item is also presented in a special display box.
