Perfect start for NSW Cup Sharks
Tuesday 26 March 2013 9:53 AM
The NSW Cup Sharks sit on top of the competition table as one of two unbeaten teams after registering a comprehensive 32-6 win over Mounties lat weekend.
After hard fought victories in the first two rounds the Tony Herman-coached Sharks put the foot down against Mounties in their match played at Aubrey Keech Reserve, running away with the match after establishing a handy 10-point first half lead.
The Sharks were on the board early when Melbourne fullback Ben Hampton scored a length of the field try and after controlling much of the first period took a 16-6 lead into the half time break.
The second 40 minutes followed a similar vein with the Sharks scoring two late tries to cement an impressive victory and sit atop the NSW Cup table alongside the Wentworthville Magpies.
Stewart Mills, who may push for a NRL spot for the local derby this week with Ricky Leutele in some doubt with a foot injury, was a popular choice as man of the match, constantly causing trouble for the opposition with his strong running.
Another bright spot for the Sharks on the day was the finishing of new recruit Alipate Ratini, with the Fijian winger touching down twice. New to rugby league and with an impressive resume as a Fijian Rugby Sevens International, Ratini possesses explosive speed with the Sharks hopeful he can learn the intricacies of the game and develop into a star in the NRL side in the future.
In addition to the strong performance of Mills, Chad Townsend and Tyrone Peachey also stood out for the Sharks, while Hampton, solid in his first two outings, managed to cross the stripe for another try in what is becoming a nice habit to have for the Melbourne fullback.
The NSW Cup Sharks will be out to continue their undefeated streak this weekend but are sure to face some stern opposition when they tackle the Newtown Jets at Sharks Stadium on Saturday. The Jets, the feeder team for the Sydney Roosters, are the reigning NSW Cup champions.
The NSW Cup match this week will be the first of three games to be played on Saturday, with the kick off scheduled for 3.00pm. The NYC Sharks v the Dragons at 5.15pm and the local derby blockbuster at 7.30pm will follow.
