Almost 300 Townsville primary school students had the unique opportunity to receive rugby league tuition from the Australian Kangaroos at a coaching clinic at the Townsville Sports Reserve on Tuesday afternoon.
The Kangaroos took time out from their preparations for the Trans-Tasman Test against New Zealand at Dairy Farmers Stadium on Saturday night to help out in a number of skills drills and chat to the eager youngsters about their life in the NRL.
Cowboys co-captain Johnathan Thurston teamed up with Manly’s Tony Williams to share some tips on exercise and nutrition as well as answering questions about their playing careers and what they had been doing in camp so far this week.
The Cowboys, ARL and QRL development teams, as well as some local school teachers who volunteered their time, oversaw the hour-long clinic which finished with an autograph signing session.
“When I was growing up in North Queensland, you didn’t get these type of opportunities but it’s great that the kids here do now,” Australian fullback Billy Slater said.
