Sharks ‘Kick Start’ Community program
Friday 10 May 2013 11:00 AM
Facilitated by the Sharks Local Charity Partner Project Youth and the Miranda and Sutherland LAC Youth Liaison Officers, Kick Start is a program that works in partnership to provide assistance and support to young people at risk of disengaging from school and having contact with the juvenile justice system.
Supported by the Sharks club and it’s community department, the Kick Start program has been modelled on similar initiatives being conducted by other PCYCs across NSW and has been operating since the beginning of 2012.
The aim of Kick Start is to increase positive relationships between young people and available support services, encourage positive behaviours and boost school attendance.
The Kick Start program works with approximately 15 males in the Sutherland Shire identified by Youth Liaison Officers (YLO’s), youth case managers (YCMs) and youth workers as coming under police notice or requiring additional support.
The 15 youngsters are also accompanied by individual mentors who will support them throughout the duration of the Kick Start program.
The participants are picked up from their home each Wednesday morning of the school term and taken to Shark Stadium where they engage in an hour of fitness between 7 and 8am with a qualified fitness instructor.
After the fitness session the boys are provided with a healthy breakfast before being transported back to school from 8.30am.
The participants will also have the opportunity to meet and interact with Sharks NRL squad members at various times.
The objectives of the program include;
• Improved behaviour and attendance at school
• Reduction in offending rates of participants
• Improve relations between the young persons and police/mentors
The program operates with the support of the Sharks and also through the generosity of the following businesses and services;
• Baker’s Delight Miranda
• Muffin Break Miranda
• Top Juice Miranda
• Kareela Fruit Shop
• Fitness First Sylvania
Kick Start was launched on Wednesday (May 8) and will run for 30 weeks during the remaining school terms.
The Sharks support of Kick Start is a part of the clubs ongoing commitment to the local area and to its charities, events and community initiatives.
