Injury update: Surgery sidelines Ryan
Wednesday 10 July 2013 3:53 PM
Sharks winger Beau Ryan has undergone an arthroscopy on his injured knee today and is likely to be sidelined for 2-4 weeks.
Ryan injured the knee while training in Townsville prior to the Cowboys match some two weeks ago and after it had failed to respond to treatment the decision was made to have the minor surgical procedure in a bid to have him fit for the back end of the 2013 season.
Outstanding on the wing for the Sharks and man of the match when switched to fullback for the Monday night game against the Rabbitohs, Ryan has excelled since joining the Cronulla club at the beginning of the year.
Sharks medical staff will assess the success or otherwise of the arthroscopic surgery in the coming days to better determine the period of time Ryan is likely to spend on the sidelines.
In Ryan’s place on the Sharks wing this week comes the highly credentialed Nathan Stapleton, with Michael Gordon, who himself has been battling injury, returning at fullback for the clash with the Broncos.
Gordon has struggled with a calf problem in recent weeks and was a late withdrawal from the team for both the Cowboys and Tigers matches.
In other Sharks injury news skipper Paul Gallen appears on track for a return to the field for State of Origin game 3 next Wednesday night at ANZ Stadium.
Gallen injured a foot while playing for NSW in the second game of the Origin series and has missed the last two Sharks games.
Of the other injured Sharks, Anthony Tupou is set to miss up to four weeks after suffering a rib cartelage injury, while Nathan Gardner is close to a return from his hamstring problem.
