The Cronulla Sharks may be looking for a fresh start in the NRL next season, but they aren’t the only side at the club.
After finishing a disappointing 16th in 2009, the Sharks NYC side will field more new faces than ever before with the start of training less than a week away.
On Wednesday 3rd November, the NYC, Harold Matthew’s Cup and SG Ball sides were welcomed back from their off-season at an orientation night where Sharks assistant coach Shane Flanagan spoke to the group ahead of season 2010.
Player recruitment has been in overdrive during the off-season and the night saw the boys come together as a group for the first time.
“Shane had a chat with the boys about the 2010 season and it also gave them a chance to mingle and put names to faces,” said NYC coach Joey Grima.
“It’s a fresh start… 50% of the players have never been in the junior program before so it was the perfect time for the players and coaching staff to get to know each other so we can now turn up to training on Monday and hit the ground running.”
After losing four of his best players after as many rounds to the NRL side last season, Grima is excited about his new recruits including the likes of Warwick Carter, Rodney Moefaauo, Scott Galagher, Jarrod Shelford and Teni Waipouri.
Moefaauo, who comes across from the Parramatta Eels, is an exciting prospect according to Grima. Standing 186cm, the front row forward has been one of the Harold Matthew’s and SG Ball’s leading try scorers over the past two seasons- not bad for a prop who weighs in at 103kg.
“Rodney has an outstanding future here,” Grima said.
“He’s not a prop that powers through a defensive line. His footwork is very impressive and it’s amazing to watch someone so big move so well.”
An explosive centre with an abundance of speed, Galagher arrives from the South Coast, while 106kg giant Waipouri comes across from the Canterbury-Bankstown grand final winning SG Ball side at just 18 years of age.
The Harold Matthews Cup and SG Ball sides will also be looking to improve on previous seasons.
