9/07/2009 4:31:51 PM

Aiton, who impressed while representing the Kumuls in the 2008 World Cup, will bring some explosive attacking skills to the Sharks in the hooker position next season.

Sharks coach Ricky Stuart in confirming the signing, explained that Aiton’s abilities were brought to his attention while coaching the Australian team in the Centenary World Cup at the end of last year.

“I definitely liked what I saw at the World Cup from Paul and he has continued his good form and has had a strong season with his club this year,” Stuart said. “While he is still a young man Paul has got some experience behind him at both NRL and international level and will certainly complement the talented youngsters we have coming through at the club.”

In emphasising Stuart’s comments about Aiton’s credentials, the 24-year-old now has over 60 NRL games to his credit and has played all 15 games in the top grade with the Panthers this season. He has also been a regular member of the Kumuls squad since 2004 and was named PNG’s 2008 Player of the Year, leading the way in his nation’s spirited performances at the recent World Cup.

The signing of Aiton continues an impressive Sharks recruiting drive which is building on the talented young roster of players they have on board in 2009.

The Sharks now add Aiton’s name to the earlier signings of utility John Morris from the Tigers and Adam Cuthbertson from the Manly Sea Eagles.

In putting together a formidable NRL squad for both 2010 and beyond, the Sharks have also been active in securing some outstanding young talent, with highly-rated halfback Albert Kelly, speedy outside back Nathan Gardiner and forwards Broderick Wright, Siosaia Vave and Rodney Moefaauo joining the club from next season.
